Setting up a genomics laboratory at the Centre MURAZ in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso
As part of the AFROSCREEN network, the Centre MURAZ of Burkina Faso’s Institut National de Santé Publique (INSP) has had a pathogen genomics laboratory since June 13, 2023.
The implementation consisted of : (i) refurbishment and renovation of premises, (ii) installation of the MiniSeq sequencer and associated genomics equipment, (iii) training for sequencer users, involving microbiology specialists from Centre MURAZ and Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Sourô Sanou.

Headed by Dr Dramane KANIA, National Coordinator of the AFROSCREEN project in Burkina Faso, this new laboratory, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, such as the Illumina MiniSeq NGS sequencer, aims to strengthen the genomic surveillance of pathogens, as well as setting up a center of excellence made up of multidisciplinary researchers for effective preparation of the response to epidemics.
In the very short term, this laboratory will provide a retrospective description of the circulation of SARS-CoV-2 variants during the pandemic period from 2020 to the present. In the medium and long term, it will be used to monitor arboviruses, viruses responsible for chronic infections (hepatitis, HIV/AIDS), antimicrobial resistance and new emerging pathogens of interest in Burkina Faso.
