Dengue is the leading mosquito-borne viral disease in humans, with a high morbidity rate in tropical and subtropical countries. The disease is caused by four distinct serotypes of dengue virus (DENV), DENV-1 to -4, all belonging to the Flaviviridae family, genus Flavivirus. Some 3.6 billion people live in areas at risk of DENV transmission, resulting in up to 390 million infections and 96 million symptomatic cases per year. Although the disease is highly endemic in the West African region, little is known about the prevalence and distribution of DENV in Niger. This article reports the first laboratory-confirmed case of dengue fever in Niger.
The article is available in the scientific journal IJID Regions on ScienceDirect.
