Meeting with AFROSCREEN partners during the 11th AFRAVIH conference in Marseille
Meeting with AFROSCREEN partners during the 11th AFRAVIH conference in Marseille
As part of the 11th AFRAVIH conference which was held from April 6 to 9, 2022, a meeting with several implementation partners of the AFROSCREEN project was held with the IRD TransVIHMI team.
On this occasion, two research contracts, on the one hand with the BIOLIM laboratory (Togo) and on the other hand the CREMER laboratory (Cameroon), were signed.

Several presentations during AFRAVIH 2022 in Marseilles highlighted the need to strengthen the sequencing and surveillance capacities of emerging viruses in African countries. This is precisely the objective of the AFROSCREEN project, through the components of capacity building in virology and epidemiology.
At the AFRAVIH conference to share the results of their research, particularly on HIV, the AFROSCREEN partners from Togo (Mounerou Salou, BIOLIM laboratory manager, and Anoumou Dagnra, director of BIOLIM, both co-authors of several presentations at AFRAVIH) and Cameroon (Charles Kouanfack, director of CREMER, member of the scientific committee, moderator of an AFRAVIH session and co-authors of several presentations) were able to formalize their involvement on the AFROSCREEN project by signing research contracts with the IRD. The project will strengthen the sequencing and PCR screening capacities of these two laboratories and, for BIOLIM, will support the implementation of epidemiological surveys in Togo. The epidemiological surveys in Cameroon are the responsibility of the Pasteur Center in Cameroon, with which CREMER collaborates.
The AFRAVIH 2022 conference also highlighted the historical scientific partnerships of the IRD with CERFIG (Guinea) and INRB (DRC), which are mobilized also in the context of the AFROSCREEN project.
During the “Emerging Infections” session, moderated by Eric D’Ortenzio (ANRS|MIE) and Dominique Costagliola (INSERM), Doctor Alpha Kabinet Keita (CERFIG Deputy Director and UMI TransVIHMI researcher) presented the rich experience of the international joint laboratory RESPIRE in response to epidemics, from the emergence of Ebola to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Finally, the TransVIHMI team, Charles Kouanfack and Marie Varloteaux (ANRS|MIE Cameroon site) also took the opportunity to hold a working meeting on the ARIACOV project, the follow-up to which is the AFROSCREEN project, and which aims to support to the African response to the Covid-19 epidemic, in particular by carrying out sero-prevalence surveys for SARS-CoV-2 in the general population.
